Step one: choose a market entry point you can validate
Hospitals, specialist clinics, laboratories, pharmacies and consumer channels differ in decision-makers, evidence requirements and supply models. Choose a product, province and customer type first so that entering Canada becomes an actionable objective.
- Professional healthcare settings: identify clinical users, purchasers, in-hospital evaluation and training requirements.
- Diagnostic and laboratory settings: check testing workflows, instrument/reagent compatibility and after-sales support.
- Retail or home use: check consumer positioning, label language, customer support and replenishment.
- Medicines, natural health products and medical devices require separate licensing checks, rather than one shared authorization checklist.
Partner screening goes beyond company profiles
A shortlist should record evidence sources and outreach status. Customer names, territories and product ranges shown online are leads to verify, not confirmed business. A company not yet contacted cannot be counted as an established channel.
- Compliance fit: product authorizations, establishment activities and public status.
- Commercial fit: customer types, territories, competing products, sales model and team coverage.
- Delivery fit: warehousing, batch traceability, training, complaints and returns.
- Partner interest: contacts, feedback, requested materials, conditions and next action.
Present product information buyers can assess
Initial partner materials should explain who the product suits, what problem it solves, supporting evidence and supply conditions. Commercial claims must match authorized uses and actual evidence.
- A one-page product profile: use, differentiation, evidence, specifications and current authorization status.
- Commercial terms sheet: proposed pricing basis, supply price, minimum orders, lead times and samples.
- Operational notes: packaging, languages, shelf life, storage, transport, training and after-sales responsibilities.
- Issue log: why a partner is not progressing and what evidence or conditions would allow continuation.
Budget beyond the quote to sustainable supply
Channel margin is not simply retail price minus factory price. Estimate freight, import costs, warehousing, distribution, training, returns and after-sales costs by product, separating one-off investment from recurring expenditure.
- Clarify who imports, holds stock, invoices and bears inventory and bad-debt risk.
- Discuss exclusivity together with territories, product lines, purchase targets, validation stages and exit provisions.
- Check conditions separately for sample evaluation, clinical use, sales demonstration and actual supply. Calling a product a sample does not remove the need for authorization assessment.
Defined milestones from shortlist to pilot
We recommend stage deliverables rather than a company directory alone. Agree what needs validating before investing in outreach, samples and inventory.
- Market entry brief: users, procurement pathways, competitors and assumptions to test.
- Channel shortlist: selection rationale, public evidence, licence checks and priorities.
- Communication log: contacted, awaiting reply, further documents needed, unsuitable and other actual statuses.
- Pilot plan: scope, prerequisites, costs and owners on both sides.
- Review and next steps: use actual feedback to expand, adjust or stop; the number of emails sent is not a substitute for results.
Where to research procurement and licensing information
MDALL and the MDEL database help verify device and establishment licences. Public procurement platforms and procurement organisations' supplier pages explain tender conditions, purchasing categories and participation, but do not guarantee partnerships or orders.
- CanadaBuys can be used to find public tender opportunities. It does not cover every provincial or healthcare procurement channel.
- HealthPRO Canada's supplier portal provides information on public procurement processes. It is a research resource, not an endorsement of Sonictec or evidence of a partnership.
- Before approaching an institution, verify its procurement process, contract cycle and supplier requirements.
Engagement approach and current scope
Sonictec's Canadian work starts with market research, identifying potential partners and coordinating preparation. Local engagement, import and delivery resources are verified and agreed for each project. We do not currently claim Canadian sales cases or a nationwide distribution network.
- An initial assessment can focus on one product, one province or one customer type.
- If local partners already exist, additional support can focus on licensing relationships, commercial conditions or evidence gaps.
- Clearly mark unconfirmed partners and unresolved delivery conditions in project records.
Frequently asked questions
Can you guarantee a distributor or orders?
No guarantee is possible. Screening and outreach have defined process deliverables; a partnership depends on the product, compliance, commercial terms and the other party's decision.
Why check the importer if we already have an MDL?
Device licences differ from licences required for establishment import and distribution activities. Check each separately and clarify actual supply and post-market responsibilities.
Can a product enter major Canadian pharmacy chains directly?
Assess channel fit, completeness of applicable authorizations, procurement, labels, supply and commercial terms. Product approval alone does not imply channel acceptance.
With an existing distributor, can we assess partnership terms only?
Yes. Discussions can cover territory, exclusivity, purchasing targets, inventory, after-sales service and exit terms. Appropriate professionals should review legal provisions when needed.
Do we need to share floor prices or a full customer list initially?
Initially provide a price range, positioning and existing channel types. Exchange sensitive details after agreeing purpose, recipient and collaboration arrangements.
